Help: Searching R14 Now

Many websites provide basic search features, and those often suffice. R14 Now supports simple full-text search plus advanced features for people who find them useful.

If you are looking for a job, you will likely encounter the same companies repeatedly, including many that are not a good fit. R14 Now makes it easy to omit them. A broad search can also match many uninteresting job titles; each can be omitted with one click. Omitted items remain visible in the search criteria, where they are easy to edit or temporarily disable.

When researching people and companies, you can likewise build a list of what to omit and focus on whom and what to include.

Full-text search: include and omit; words and phrases

Full-text search uses approximate matching, such as stemming to a root word and matching singular or plural forms.

The placeholder describes the core syntax: Search words or "quoted phrases"; use '-' to omit.

  • Words without quotes — separate search terms
  • Quoted words — one phrase
  • - before a word or quoted phrase — omit it

The adjacent drop-down menu provides two options:

  • all — require every search term; a more specific search
  • any — require at least one search term; a broader search

The menu is on the right of the full-text search box and on the left of each fielded search box.

X Profile search has one special case: when the @ checkbox is checked, you can paste a mix of plain text and @usernames; only the @usernames will be searched.

When searching jobs and hiring companies, these radio buttons control the full-text scope:

  • description — company summary, name, and domain
  • all — the above plus other text fields, such as location

The Jobs, Companies, and X Profiles pages have textboxes for searching specific fields. Each supports include and omit criteria.

  • Click the field name or either icon (🔷 or ) to open a larger editor for that field.
  • The editor has a top row for criteria displayed in the main form and a second row for optional criteria, such as a longer list built over time.
  • Use the checkbox before either icon to enable or ignore that row.
  • Each text field has its own all/any menu:
    • 🔷 include + all — require every term
    • 🔷 include + any — require at least one term
    • omit + any — exclude a result matching at least one term
    • omit + all — exclude a result only when every term matches

Fielded text search is literal rather than stemmed:

  • Words without quotes — separate search terms
  • Quoted words — one phrase

Omit takes precedence: first find matches to the include criteria, then remove matches to the omit criteria.

'or empty'

When you actively specify an include value, or empty additionally includes results whose corresponding data is empty or unknown.

If the include criterion is disabled or has no value, or empty has no effect.

Tags

Companies have overlapping tags. The Tags sidebar can be used as part of any search or filter.

Active included and omitted tags appear at the top. Their controls match the fielded search controls: enable checkbox, icon, all/any menu, and—for included tags—or empty.

If a tag is already active, click the tag to remove it or click its other icon to switch between include and omit.

In the list of available tags:

  • Click a tag or its blue diamond — include it
  • Click the omit icon before a tag — omit it

At the bottom of the sidebar:

  • Min tag count: — show or hide less-common tags in the sidebar; does not affect search results
  • Apply tag changes: — apply changes right away, or wait until you click Update

The entire Tags sidebar can be collapsed or expanded. Active criteria continue to affect results while it is collapsed.

Saved choices

Except for full-text search, filter criteria are saved in your current browser and should survive quitting and relaunching it, unless the browser automatically purges its stored data.

Actions

When search criteria have changed without being applied, the Search button changes to Update. Click Update to see the new results.

By default, changes in the Tags sidebar take effect right away. To wait and apply several changes together, select after click 'Update' at the bottom of the Tags sidebar.
